Music, Movies, Musings: Welcome Home (Reaction/Review)

I’ve occasionally talked about feeding—or falling prey—to my own creative indulgences. For the record, I am very easily impressed and I can from time to time, become madly infatuated with a song, video, movie, picture, etc, almost instantly. Those who know me well have heard me utter these same seven words in different contexts all the time: “This is the best thing I’ve ever...” then insert any verb [tasted, heard, touched, etc...]. But, there are those few things that do more than just feed my impressionable heart, and instead, bloom lasting inspiration.

Netflix's New Horror Classic: Verónica (REVIEW)

There is something rather intoxicating about one’s native tongue and the beauty that flows from its timbre. Almost like a sacred incantation that ensnares your ears, the spellbinding appeal of its words caress the deepest recess of my soul and makes me feel ancient. These words like roads, roots, veins connect me to the richness of a history that spans hundreds and thousands of years before me. Again, it is quite bewitching. With that said, watching this horror movie in Spanish, for me, was doubly enchanting and by far, more haunting than anything I’ve ever seen before.

Black Panther Album (Review/Reaction)

I’d like to amend my previous statements about the most prolific artist working today. I had recently praised Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino, as one of the most complete entertainers working in the entertainment industry right now. Although he deserves all of the credit in the world, and I still consider him one of the best and most complete artists in current existence, it’s hard not to put Kendrick Lamar in this conversation.

Oceans Pre-Teen: A Chuck E. Cheese Heist

If you guys have heard at least one of our shows, then you know that the Ocean’s movies—as in, Oceans 11, Oceans 12, and Oceans 13—have become a permanent fixture in our vernacular. We probably haven’t gone one show without quoting at least one Oceans' line. In many ways, just as Rusty, Danny, Linus, Ruben, Basher and the others all have their own criminal world language that we often don’t really understand, the same can be said of us in this regard. I know Uno and I are the biggest offenders of this. From “Peligro es mi nombre medio” to “Oh let the sun beat down upon my face... I am a traveler of both time and space…”, we volley these phrases back and forth and can immediately know what the other means with each quote. And, even though The Beta Report is split on which of the two sequels—Oceans 12 or 13—is better, we can all agree that all three of these movies are great. But, if you want to make your voice heard on the matter, head over to our Facebook page to vote on our poll for which one you like the best. To make this choice even easier, if you guys listened to our latest episode, you know that we can now enjoy all these movies on Netflix. They’re all available to stream and we can now settle this debate once and for all!

As the mountains of tamales, turkey, ham, or whatever else you guys have for Christmas and New Years begin to dwindle down to valleys of already ruined resolutions and regret. And, the post-apocalyptic world of wrapping paper, glass bottles, and the instantly forgotten gifts strewn across what was formerly known as your house is becoming too overwhelming and you just need to escape...Never fear, January 2018 seems to have some great films to help you abandon the rebuilding efforts for just a few hours, or at least until the toasters, blenders, and all other household items you’re planning to return to Target become sentient and take over the world. But, never mind all that, let’s take a look at some of the movies coming to a theater near you in January:

Future People Vol. II: The Creators

Creation is electric. An idea strikes like a fervent brush stroke that stimulates necessity. It lights up your mind like a lightning bolt of effervescent freedom and possibilities. This creativity is beautiful and contagious and soon a merger of souls occurs.

Commited to Curiosity

Committed to the unseen, a memory played out in this dream like scene: A Star Wars sheet on my living room floor soothes like oceans’ pour. Every wrinkle is the ebb that my fourth grade fingers smoothed out to let comfort flow. The heat outside extinguished by the ceiling fan breeze from our Cudahy home. My surrogate sun, the TV was the only source of warmth as the Capri Sun and Cheetos filled my belly.
